Many visitors to Santorini typically choose to stay in either Fira or Oia. However, I’m also recommending Imerovigli as a fantastic alternative, depending on the experience you seek. Having stayed in both Fira and Imerovigli, and visited Oia multiple times, here are my observations that may assist you in making the decision.
Imerovigli
Pros:
- Luxury Accommodations: Many of the island’s most luxurious hotels and resorts are located here. We stayed in a fabulous boutique hotel, the villa Elidami at Aenaon Villas, which highly recommend.
- Serene Environment: Imerovigli is known for its peaceful and quiet atmosphere, making it ideal for a relaxing stay. The tranquil environment makes it the perfect place to stay for a romantic occasion such as an engagement or honeymoon.
- Breathtaking Views: Due to Imerovigli’s high perch, it has some of the most stunning views over the caldera, Fira’s iconic white-washed buildings, and Oia in the distance. During our stay, we witnessed mesmerizing sunrises and the most incredibly beautiful sunsets that I have ever seen.
Cons:
- Limited Nightlife: As mentioned above, Imerovigli offers a quieter environment, so if you’d like to visit bars or clubs, you’d need to take a 10-minute car ride to Fira.
- Less Central: It’s a bit more isolated, so getting to other parts of the island will require more travel time.
- Fewer Shops and Restaurants: There are fewer shopping and dining options compared to Fira and Oia.
Fira
Pros:
- Many Shops and Restaurants: Fira has a plethora of small shops ranging from luxury boutiques to souvenir shops, and everything in between. It could take the better part of the day to browse all of the shops. Fira also has many dining options, including my favorite, Argo.
- Central Location: Fira is the main hub of Santorini. It’s quite easy to get around the island from here.
- Vibrant Nightlife: Anyone coming to Santorini for the lively nightlife scene would to best to base in Fira. It is known for its numerous bars and nightclubs.
- Cultural Sites: Fira has several museums and historical sites, including the Archaeological Museum of Thera and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera.
Cons:
- Busy Atmosphere: Being the main town, Fira can get very crowded, especially during peak tourist season. It also serves as the primary stop for cruise ship traffic.
- Noise: Due to its energetic atmosphere Fira can be noisy, making it less suitable for those looking for a quiet and relaxing stay.
OIA
Pros:
- Scenic Beauty: Oia is known for its stunning sunsets, blue-domed churches, and panoramic views of the caldera.
- Romantic Atmosphere: It’s a popular destination for couples and honeymooners due to its picturesque and serene environment.
- Art and Culture: Oia exudes a sophisticated vibe and is home to numerous art galleries, making it an excellent place to explore traditional Greek culture.
Cons:
- Higher Prices: Accommodations, shopping, and dining will likely be more expensive compared to Fira and Imerovigli.
- Crowds at Sunset: Oia attracts large crowds for its famous sunsets, which can make the small village feel overcrowded at times.
- Less Nightlife: Oia has a more laid-back vibe with fewer nightlife options compared to Fira.
- Closer Beach Access: Oia, like Fira and Imerovigli, is perched on cliffs, but has closer access to some of the island’s best beaches.
Summary:
- Imerovigli: Perfect for travelers looking for luxury, tranquility, and breathtaking sunsets, with less emphasis on nightlife and shopping.
- Fira: Best for those who want to be in the center of the action with easy access to transportation, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife.
- Oia: Ideal for couples and those seeking a romantic atmosphere, beautiful views, and a more refined and relaxed atmosphere.
Each location offers its own distinct charm and appeal, so your choice will depend on your personal preferences and the type of experience you seek in Santorini. Regardless of where you decide to stay, Santorini stands as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world.
