Venice festivals and events take place throughout the year, offering a vibrant calendar of celebrations. In addition to the nation’s national holidays, many regions in Italy have their own local festivals and celebrations that are deeply rooted in their cultural heritage. Here are some of the most popular local events and festivals that take place in Venice:
Carnevale di Venezia (Venice Carnival)
The most popular event in Venice, and one of the most famous events in the world, is Venice’s own Carnevale di Venezia, held every February. Events take place throughout the city and this event features elaborate masks, costumes, and parties in the enchanting setting of Venice’s canals and historic streets.

Festa del Redentore (Feast of the Redeemer)
Celebrated on the third Sunday in July, this festival commemorates the end of the plague in 1576. A pontoon bridge is constructed across the Giudecca Canal for people to walk to the Church of the Redeemer. The evening is marked by spectacular fireworks and regatta over the lagoon. Locals and visitors often enjoy picnicking on boats in the evening.
Regata Storica
Held on the first Sunday of September, this historical regatta is a fun event with rowing races and a colorful procession along the Grand Canal. Gondoliers and rowers in period costumes parade along the Grand Canal before the races begin. It’s a cool way to see some local action and enjoy the Venice vibe right on the water.
Festa della Sensa
This religious festival takes place on the Sunday after Ascension Day in May. It commemorates the city’s marriage to the sea and includes a water parade to the Lido and a traditional ceremony. It includes a symbolic “Wedding with the Sea” ceremony.
Venice Film Festival
Every summer, Venice buzzes with the excitement of one of the oldest and most famous film festivals in the world. Held annually in late August or early September, this prestigious film festival attracts celebrities, filmmakers, and film enthusiasts from around the world. The city turns into a lively hub of cinema, glamour, and red-carpet moments. Even if you’re not attending screenings, the energy around town is something special to experience.
Redentore
The annual Redentore Fireworks is a major attraction in Venice, drawing crowds of people and boats lining the waterways.
Venice festivals and events offer a great way to experience the city’s rich culture and history. Whether you visit during Carnival, the Biennale, or any of the other celebrations, you’re sure to be swept up in the magic and charm that make Venice truly unforgettable.
Venice Biennale
This biennial art and architecture exhibition is one of the most important cultural events in Venice. It features contemporary art, dance, music, theater, and architecture from artists and architects worldwide.
