Prickly Pear Margarita Recipe: A Taste of the Southwest at Home

Prickly Pear Margarita

If you’ve ever found yourself wandering through Arizona, New Mexico, or even the upscale resorts of Scottsdale, you’ve probably spotted this vibrant pink cocktail on the menu. The prickly pear margarita is a Southwest favorite—bursting with citrusy brightness and the sweet fruit of the prickly pear cactus. Whether you’ve sipped one in Sedona, daydreamed in Santa Fe, or just love a good desert sunset, this recipe brings the vibe home.

Ingredients (for 1 cocktail)

  • 2 oz silver tequila
  • 1 oz Cointreau or triple sec
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 1 oz prickly pear syrup (buy it here)
  • Ice
  • Coarse Tajín Chile Lime Rimmer (buy it here)
  • Lime wedge or thin slice of prickly pear, for garnish

*Note: If you prefer a bit of spice in your cocktails, try this spiced prickly pear syrup instead.

Instructions

  1. Rim the glass: Rub a lime wedge around the rim and dip into coarse salt or Tajín.
  2. Shake: In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, lime juice, Cointreau, and prickly pear syrup. Add ice and shake well for 15 seconds.
  3. Serve: Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice.
  4. Garnish: Add a lime wedge or prickly pear slice if you can find one.
