Madrid is the largest city in Spain and one of the largest cities in Europe. As of 2024, the population is approximately 3.4 million people. This big city has something for everyone, from its world-class museums to its bustling tapas bars. With its unique mix of tradition and contemporary flair, Madrid promises a memorable experience. Get ready to explore and find out why this city is such a popular destination!
Cooking Class
If you’re up for a hands-on adventure, a cooking class is a great way to dive into Spanish cuisine. Shawna and I had a blast learning how to make tapas and homemade Sangria, and we picked up some fun cultural tidbits along the way. For example, did you know that “vermouth time” is a popular Spanish tradition? It’s a relaxed pre-lunch gathering where folks enjoy a glass of vermouth with small tapas. It’s a nice way to slow down and savor good company, which is a big part of Spanish life.
Royal Palace of Madrid
This iconic landmark in Madrid is a must-see. As one of the largest palaces in Europe, it provides an intriguing look into Spain’s royal past. You’ll find rooms like the Throne Room and the Hall of Mirrors, filled with ornate decorations and historical treasures. The Royal Armory has a huge collection of medieval armor, and the surrounding Royal Gardens offer charming spots for photos.
When planning your visit, it’s wise to book tickets ahead of time and check the opening hours, as the palace might be closed on certain holidays. The palace is located in central Madrid, so it’s easy to get to by walking or using public transportation.
Stroll Through Retiro Park
This large park is ideal for a relaxing afternoon. You can rent a rowboat and enjoy some time on the Grand Pond, have lunch or snap photos in front of the Crystal Palace, or just unwind in one of its many peaceful corners.
Explore the World of Art
If you’re a big art lover, be sure to visit the Golden Triangle of Art. The Prado Museum is renowned for its impressive collection of classical masterpieces. For modern art enthusiasts, the Reina Sofia Museum features works like Picasso’s Guernica, while the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum provides a broad range of art from Van Gogh to Hopper.
If you’re short on time, prioritize the Prado Museum. Its extensive collection of classic art and iconic pieces from Spanish masters makes it the most popular and representative of Madrid’s art scene.
Almudena Cathedral
At the Almudena Cathedral, you’ll see lovely stained-glass windows and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. The dome provides fantastic views of the city. Since the cathedral is right next to the Royal Palace, it’s a great idea to visit both attractions in one trip.
Enjoy a Flamenco Show
Experience the passion of Flamenco where you can enjoy a vibrant performance paired with authentic Spanish cuisine. If you haven’t seen a show before, it’s a must-see and a captivating experience. Consider visiting Tablao Villa Rosa or Casa Patas for an authentic experience.
Participate in a Tapas Tour
Taking a food tour in Madrid is a great way to dive into the city’s culinary scene. You’ll get to explore traditional tapas bars and wandering through busy markets such as Mercado de San Miguel. Try authentic Spanish dishes like cocido madrileno, patatas bravas, churros with chocolate, and paella, while learning about the history and culture behind each bite.
Explore the Best Shopping Spots
If you’re looking for a fun and relaxed shopping experience in Madrid, Chueca and Calle de Fuencarral are the places to be. Chueca is a lively neighborhood full of character, where you’ll find a mix of trendy boutiques, stylish fashion stores, and unique design shops. It’s perfect for picking up everything from the latest fashion trends to quirky home decor and one-of-a-kind gifts. Just a short stroll away, Calle de Fuencarral is a pedestrian street packed with cool shops and concept stores. It’s a great spot for discovering new Spanish brands, fashionable accessories, and unusual finds. Both areas are full of energy and charm, making them ideal for a leisurely shopping day while enjoying the local vibe.
Enjoy a Fun Segway Tour
Taking a Segway tour is a fun and great way to see a city from a different angle. It’s super easy to learn, so you don’t need any special skills or experience. Most tours start with a quick training session, and then you’re off gliding through the streets. It’s perfect for just about anyone, as long as you can balance and have a bit of coordination.
On the Madrid Segway Tour, you’ll get to zip past major landmarks like the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and Retiro Park while covering more ground than you would on foot. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy Madrid’s highlights and have a good time doing it!
Madrid enjoys a varied climate throughout the year, with hot summers and mild winters. In the summer months, temperatures often soar to around 85-95°F, with July and August being the hottest. If you’re okay with the heat, it’s a great time to enjoy Madrid’s outdoor cafes and vibrant street life. Spring and Fall have more moderate temperatures, ranging from 60-75°F, making it ideal for sightseeing and strolling around the city comfortably. Winter is relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from 40-60°F, so it’s a good time for those who prefer cooler weather and fewer crowds. For the best experience, consider visiting in Spring or Fall when the weather is pleasant and you can enjoy Madrid’s attractions without the extreme summer heat or winter chill.
Catalonia Plaza Mayor
Class: 4-star
Style: Classic, Charming
We had a very nice stay at the Catalonia Plaza Mayor in Madrid. The rooms are elegantly decorated with a classic charm, and the beds are super comfortable, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring. The hotel’s amenities, including a lovely rooftop terrace and a cozy lounge area, added to the overall experience. Plus, the location is perfect—right near Plaza Mayor and other key attractions, so we could easily walk to many of Madrid’s highlights.
Getting around Madrid is pretty easy. For a convenient and efficient way to explore the city, I’d recommend using the Metro—it’s quick, affordable, and connects you to most major attractions. The buses are also great if you prefer to see the city above ground, and there are plenty of them to take you wherever you need to go. If you enjoy walking, Madrid is quite pedestrian-friendly, especially in neighborhoods like Malasana and Chueca. You can also rent a bike or use the city’s bike-sharing program if you’re up for some fresh air and exercise.
One thing to keep in mind is that driving in Madrid can be a bit tricky due to traffic and limited parking, so it’s probably best to avoid renting a car unless you plan to explore areas outside the city. For tourists, the Madrid Tourist Travel Pass can be useful—it offers unlimited travel on public transport for a set number of days, which is perfect for getting around without worrying about buying individual tickets. Overall, the Metro, buses, and walking are your best bets for enjoying Madrid hassle-free!
