Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Croatia’s most stunning spots, and it’s definitely worth a visit if you love nature and outdoor adventures. I had seen photos of Plitvice for years before finally getting the chance to go, so I was super excited to see this beautiful place up close and in person.  And yes, it is everything I thought it would be and IT REALLY IS THAT BEAUTIFUL!  The water is this amazing turquoise color, and there are wooden walkways that let you stroll right over the lakes and get close to the waterfalls. The trails are well-marked, so whether you’re into a leisurely walk or a more vigorous hike, you’ll find something that suits you.

Worth the Drive

If you are visiting Croatia and happen to be in Dubrovnik or Split, it is well worth it to make the trek to Plitvice for a night.  Don’t let the distance deter you because this park is going to be one of the most stunningly beautiful places you will ever lay your eyes on (my pictures do not do it justice).

Best Time to Visit

For the best experience at Plitvice Lakes National Park, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons—late spring (May to early June) or early autumn (September to October). During these times, the weather is usually pleasant, and the park is less crowded than in peak summer, giving you more space to enjoy the stunning lakes and waterfalls. We visited in September, but I would love to visit again in late October to see the park in all of its beautiful fall colors.

If you prefer warmer weather and longer days, summer (July to August) is also a good option, though it’s the busiest time. Early morning visits can help you avoid the crowds and make the most of your trip. Winter is another magical time if you’re okay with colder temperatures and potential snow, which creates a serene, snowy landscape.  I don’t think there really is a wrong time to visit Plitvice, with each season offering something special.

Advance Tickets

Yes, it’s a good idea to buy your tickets in advance, especially during the peak tourist season. The park can get quite busy, and having your tickets ahead of time will save you from long lines and ensure you get the entry time you prefer. You can purchase tickets online through the park’s official website.

Accommodations

When it comes to staying in the area, the town of Plitvička Jezera, which is right by the park, has a range of accommodation options. You can find cozy guesthouses, comfy hotels, and even some upscale lodges. Staying here puts you close to the park, so you can easily pop in for early morning or late afternoon visits when the crowds are thinner.  We stayed at Plitvice Etno House III which is a a charming property right near the park, making it super convenient for your visit. It’s got a cozy, traditional vibe with rustic decor that really gives you that homey feel. It’s a great choice if you want a mix of comfort and local flair while being just a short drive from the park’s entrance.

Another property that gets fabulous reviews is Plivica River House.  It’s set right by the river, giving you lovely views and a serene atmosphere.

Dining in Plitvice

Dining options around Plitvice are pretty relaxed. You’ll find a mix of local eateries and restaurants that serve hearty, traditional Croatian fare. It’s a good idea to try some local specialties, and you might want to grab a bite before heading into the park or after a day of exploring.

We had a really nice dinner at Bistro Plum.  It’s a cozy spot that serves a great mix of traditional Croatian dishes and some creative twists. You’ll find hearty options like stews and fresh salads, along with a nice selection of local wines. The staff is friendly and attentive. It’s a great place to enjoy a tasty meal in a laid-back setting.

Unforgettable Destination

Overall, Plitvice is a fantastic destination for nature lovers and anyone looking to experience some of Croatia’s most stunning natural beauty. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes, bring a camera, and get ready to be amazed by the incredible scenery!
