ISLANDS OF CROATIA

Croatia has a ton of islands! There are more than 1,000, with 48 of them inhabited. During our visit, we were lucky enough to have had the chance to visit several. Our good friends who accompanied us were so captivated by the islands, that they are returning this year to spend a week exploring others via pontoon boat.

Here’s an overview of five of the most popular:

Hvar

Hvar, often referred to as “glamourous” and the “Queen of the Dalmatian Islands,” is Croatia’s most popular island destination. Here’s why Hvar is a must-visit:

• Stunning Beaches: Hvar is renowned for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. From lively beach bars to secluded coves, there’s a beach for every preference. Some notable ones include Dubovica Beach and Palmižana Beach.
• Lavender Fields: The island is famous for its lavender fields, especially around the village of Velo Grablje. Visiting during the blooming season offers a breathtaking sight and a wonderful aroma.

• Hvar Town: The main town on the island, Hvar Town, is a hub of activity and history. It boasts a picturesque harbor, elegant stone houses, and narrow winding streets.

• Hvar Fortress (Fortica): Overlooking the town, this fortress offers stunning views of Hvar Town and the surrounding islands. It’s a great spot for panoramic photos and a bit of history.

Where to Stay

• Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel: The hotel enjoys a prime location in the heart of Hvar town, placing it conveniently near restaurants, boutiques, and the harbor. The accommodations are luxurious, boasting stunning sea views. The staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Where to Dine

The best restaurants in Hvar are Gariful, Giaxa, Passarola, and Dalmatino. A great option for breakfast is Fig Cafe & Bar. When it comes to bars, Carpe Diem, Hula Hula, Kalavanda, and Prsuta 3 are good choices.

• Giaxa – Offers a mix of Mediterranean and Italian cuisine, known for its pasta dishes and homemade desserts.

Korcula

Korcula, renowned for its well-preserved medieval old town, is often referred to as mini Dubrovnik.

Natural Beauty

Korcula evokes a picturesque, storybook-like setting with its vineyards, olive groves, and pristine coastline featuring crystal-clear waters and pebbled beaches. The island is dotted with charming villages offering sea views, while the town itself is encircled by fortified walls and towers, and crisscrossed by narrow, winding streets.

Things to Do

The waters around Korcula are perfect for boating, swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. There are some great beaches like Przina and Vela Przina where you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas. Kayaking and windsurfing are popular, as are hiking and cycling the trails throughout the island.

Korcula is also known for making great wine, and is host to wine festivals throughout the year, such as the Korcula Wine Festival. The island produces several unique wines, including white wines made from the Pošip and Grk grape varieties, as well as red wines from Plavac Mali and other local grapes. There are several wine tour options for those who wish to visit a few wineries, see their wine making process, and taste the unique wines of the island. Some good wineries to consider visiting are the Bire and Saints Hills wineries.

• Bire Winery: Located on the eastern side of the island and enjoys a beautiful coastal setting with views of the Adriatic. The winery is known for its production of Grk wine, a unique local white wine.
• Saints Hills Winery: The winery produces a variety of white and red wines made from Grk, Posip, and Plavac Mali grape varieties. It is located in the village of Cara and has picturesque views of the hills and vineyards.

4 Popular Towns and Villages on Brac:

1) Bol

Bol, located on the southern coast of Brac is a beautiful destination that stands out for its stunning natural beauty, historic charm, and endless list of outdoor activities.

The most famous place in Bol is Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) beach, one of Croatia’s most iconic natural landmarks. You’ve likely come across it in photos of “bucket list destinations” because of how unique and beautiful it is.  This beach stretches into the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, its shape changing with the wind and currents. Zlatni Rat is not just a scenic spot but also a hub for water sports, with ideal conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing, snorkeling, and diving.  It’s a fairly busy beach, so for those seeking quieter moments by the sea, check out beautiful beaches like Martinica and Murvica to unwind in peaceful surroundings.

Nature lovers and adventurers will fall in love with Bol not only for Zlatni Rat but also for its surrounding landscapes. Vidova Gora, the highest peak on Brac Island, has well-marked hiking trails and panoramic views of Bol, Zlatni Rat beach, and the neighboring islands.

The town of Bol itself has that quaint historical vibe with its winding narrow streets, medieval stone houses, and charming squares. The Dominican Monastery, which is well worth a visit, offers a glimpse into Bol’s past. The town comes alive during the summer months with a vibrant atmosphere, with bustling restaurants and shops.

In Bol, food lovers are in for a treat with its cozy restaurants and konobas serving up dishes made from fresh local ingredients. Seafood lovers will especially love the variety of freshly caught dishes like octopus (my fave), sea bass, oysters, sardines, and cuttlefish.

Compared to the dynamic energy of Hvar and the sophisticated serenity of Vis, Bol offers a unique blend of both, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an energetic yet laid-back island experience. It’s easy to understand why Bol is Brac’s most popular town. It’s perfect if you want to relax by the beach but still have some modern comforts.

2) Supetar

Supetar is the main port and entry point to Brac, offering a mix of historical sites, cafes, and restaurants. It’s a quieter alternative to Bol, with a more laid-back atmosphere. It is situated on the northern coast of Brac, and like many of the charming coastal towns of Croatia, it embodies the essence of Mediterranean charm against the backdrop of the Adriatic Sea.

One of Supetar’s most enticing features is its array of stunning beaches. Whether you prefer soft sands or smooth pebbles, you’ll find a beach to suit your taste. Vrilo Beach and Banj Beach are among the favorites, with clear turquoise waters perfect for swimming and relaxing in the sun. The beaches are well-maintained and equipped with amenities, making them ideal for families and sunseekers.

Supetar has a vibrant culinary scene that celebrates local flavors, and as with all of the towns on Brac, they serve up some great seafood dishes. There are restaurants and taverns dotted along the waterfront that serve up freshly caught fish and traditional Dalmatian dishes.

Supetar also has a rich cultural and historical heritage. Strolling through the town, you can explore landmarks such as the Church of St. Peter with a bell tower that overlooks the town square. 3) Postira

Postira, a charming fishing village, located on Brac’s northern coast, is known for its scenic harbor, traditional stone houses, and olive groves. It’s a great place to experience authentic Dalmatian culture.  It is known for its serene atmosphere, traditional Dalmatian architecture, and beautiful coastal views, offering an escape from more tourist-heavy spots.

The village is centered around its quaint harbor, which serves as both a functional port and a scenic spot for leisurely strolls. The harbor is surrounded by narrow streets lined with traditional stone houses, giving Postira a distinctly authentic and charming feel. The old-world ambiance is complemented by local cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood and traditional Croatian dishes.

4) Milna

Milna is nestled in a picturesque bay on the western coast of Brac. It is a tranquil fishing village known for its beautiful architecture and relaxed ambiance. The harbor area is also home to several cozy cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy local seafood and Mediterranean cuisine while enjoying views of the water.

The village has several lovely beaches and coves for swimming and sunbathing. While Milna itself has a small pebble beach right by the harbor, nearby spots like the pebbly beach of Lucica provide a more secluded experience. The surrounding area is lush with Mediterranean vegetation, making it a great place for nature walks and exploring the island’s natural beauty.

• Restaurant Bago offers a slightly more upscale dining experience with a modern twist. The setting is stylish and elegant, with a nice blend of indoor and outdoor seating that lets you enjoy views of the marina. Their menu features a mix of Mediterranean and international dishes, so you can enjoy everything from fresh seafood to delicious steaks. The service is top-notch, and it’s a great place for a special night out or a romantic dinner with a view.

Which town to choose?

Each town on Brač offers a unique experience. If you’re after a relaxed pace and a laid-back vibe, Milna or Postira are ideal choices. Bol is the most lively of the towns, making it perfect for those who crave an energetic atmosphere and are keen on water sports. Supetar, with its vibrant local life, historical sites, and seaside relaxation, strikes a balance between activity and tranquility, making it a great all-rounder for visitors.

Vis

Alright, let’s talk about Vis—one of Croatia’s hidden gems and definitely worth a visit if you’re craving a bit of adventure mixed with laid-back charm. Known for its untouched landscapes and secluded beaches, Vis appeals to travelers seeking tranquility. Slightly off-the-beaten-path, Vis is a place that offers a perfect mix of stunning landscapes, rich history, and some pretty great local vibes.

Landscape

Vis is all about relaxation and natural beauty. You’ll find gorgeous beaches with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The most famous beach, Stiniva, is a bit of a hidden treasure—it’s tucked away in a secluded bay and surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Getting there might require a bit of a trek or a boat ride, but the view and the swim are totally worth it.

Laid-back Towns

The island’s main town, also called Vis, has a super charming, laid-back vibe. Picture narrow streets, cozy cafes, and a picturesque waterfront. It’s like stepping back in time with its old buildings and historic architecture. You’ll find cool spots to grab a coffee or a meal, and the seafood is fresh and delicious—straight from the sea!

Then there’s Komiža, another lovely town on the island. It’s known for its fishing heritage and has this fantastic old-world charm. It’s a bit smaller and more laid-back compared to Vis Town, but it’s got its own unique vibe with great little spots to eat and relax.

History and Local Wine

Vis is also steeped in history. The island was used as a military base during the Yugoslav era, so there are some interesting historical sites and hidden military bunkers to explore. Plus, the local wine is fantastic. The island’s vineyards produce some excellent wines, so make sure to try a glass or two!

Hiking and Nature

For those who love nature, you’re in for a treat. The island has some beautiful hiking trails with amazing views of the coastline and the sea. The Blue Cave on the nearby island of Biševo is a must-see—this magical cave has a stunning blue light that’s best experienced by boat.

Getting There

Getting to Vis isn’t exactly a trek, but it does involve a few steps, especially if you’re coming from the mainland or another island. The most common way to reach Vis is by taking a ferry from Split. The ferry ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on whether you’re on a passenger or car ferry. The ferries are fairly frequent, especially during the tourist season, so you won’t have to wait long for a departure. The ferry terminal in Split is well-connected and easy to navigate. For a faster option, there’s also a catamaran service that gets you to Vis in about an hour.

If you’re hopping over from another island like Hvar or Brav, there are ferries that connect these islands with Vis. These routes might be less frequent, so it’s a good idea to check the schedule in advance.

Unwind and Explore

Overall, Vis is perfect if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle, soak in some beautiful scenery, and dive into local culture and history. It’s got a relaxed vibe, fantastic beaches, and a rich heritage that makes it a memorable spot to explore. So pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready for a chill adventure on Vis!

• Roki’s is a lively spot with great food and even better views. It’s set in a picturesque location and is known for its tasty grilled meats and seafood. The atmosphere is casual and fun, making it a perfect place to enjoy a hearty meal while soaking in the island vibe. The friendly service and vibrant environment make Roki’s a hit with both locals and visitors.
• Belotovo has a really charming, homey vibe that makes you feel right at ease. Located in a scenic spot, it’s perfect for enjoying a mix of local and Mediterranean dishes. Their seafood and pasta are fresh and flavorful, and the relaxed setting and friendly staff make it a great place for a leisurely meal while enjoying the beauty of Vis.

Pag

Pag is one of Croatia’s most intriguing islands, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for something a bit different from the typical Mediterranean vibe. Famous for its lunar-like landscape and production of world-renowned Pag cheese, Pag offers a unique blend of tradition and natural beauty.

Getting There

Reaching Pag is relatively easy, and there’s no epic trek involved. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so if you’re driving, you can simply cross over from the town of Pag. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Zadar.

Landscape

Pag’s landscape is like nothing else in Croatia. The island is famous for its moon-like terrain, with rocky, barren areas that look almost otherworldly. It’s a stark contrast to the lush greenery you might find elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Despite this rugged appearance, Pag has some beautiful beaches, like Zrće Beach, known for its lively atmosphere and great parties. For a quieter spot, try the sandy beach of Simuni, which offers a more relaxed environment.

Town Vibes

The town of Pag, the island’s largest settlement, is full of charm with its historical architecture and narrow streets.
