After spending a month exploring Provence, I think Gordes might be the most beautiful town in the region. Nothing really prepares you for that moment when you come up the hill and see the town spread out before you — the stone houses catching the sunlight, the winding streets, the little touches of lavender and greenery everywhere. It’s breathtaking, and honestly, no photo does it justice.

Exploring the Village:
Gordes is small but hilly, with cobblestone streets that twist and turn between stone houses. Wear comfortable shoes, and take your time wandering the alleys. Around every corner, there’s a view worth pausing for: rooftops glowing in the sun, church towers peeking out between buildings, and the lovely valley below. Even just a couple of hours wandering around gives plenty of spots worth stopping for photos. Gordes really is that beautiful.
Visiting the Market:
Gordes gets busy, especially on market days (Tuesdays), when the market runs from 8am-1pm. I went twice — once on a market day and once on a non-market day — and I’d definitely recommend going on a market day. The streets have more activity, the stalls are out, and you can really see what the village has to offer.

Come early on market days to grab a parking space that isn’t super far away. On non-market days, here’s the thing: if you go early, you’ll have a better chance at parking and quieter streets, but not everything will be open yet. Come a little later in the morning and most stores and restaurants will be open, but parking can be tricky. My advice? Just go prepared to walk a bit and soak it all in, no matter what time you arrive.

The market itself is charming. They have fresh produce, local crafts, handmade goodies, and little treasures you can bring home. I found some great Provence-style bags that made perfect gifts, as well as some lavender sachets.

Where to Stay:
If you want to linger and take it all in, Domaine Les Martins is a quiet accommodation just outside the village, offering stunning views of the surrounding valley. It’s the perfect place if you want to wake up to that hilltop beauty and return for sunset.

Where to Eat:
For a lunch with a view, La Trinquette looks incredible. The menu is full of classic Provencal dishes, and the terrace overlooks the valley below (which feels like stepping into a painting).
Even though Gordes is small and can get crowded, it leaves a lasting impression. I found it to be so charming and breathtakingly beautiful. From the stunning hilltop views to the charm of its little cobbled streets, it’s a town that lingers in your memory long after you leave.
