Renting a boat in Hvar was one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had on vacation, until we nearly sank. But more about that later!
Setting Sail in Hvar: An Unexpected Twist
Brian and I were on vacation with our good friends Danette and Phil. While Danette and Brian were finishing up breakfast, Phil and I decided to walk over to Mario Boats and rent a boat for the day. We were presented with laminated pictures showcasing various boat rental options. After making our choice, we headed back to our fantastic villa (details here), gathered our belongings, and set out for a day on the water.
Phil and Danette, being seasoned boat owners, felt confident about the day’s voyage. We designated Phil as our captain, and after a brief instruction session from the Mario Boat staff, we were ready to embark.
Sun, Sea, and Speed
As we slowly exited the harbor, I eagerly anticipated leaving the “no wake” zone behind and urged Phil to pick up the pace. “This is as fast as it goes,” he said, leaving me somewhat bewildered. Our boat, which I affectionately named “Pokey,” maxed out at 10 knots, or about 11 miles per hour. It wasn’t lightning-speed, but no matter, we were out on the water and ready for a day of sun-soaked fun.
Nude Beaches and Secluded Coves
We went everywhere! As we passed a nude beach, I took this picture from a respectable distance.
We also found ourselves admiring numerous exquisite beachfront residences, daydreaming about owning one of them.
We found our way to a little sea cave, and we jumped off and swam in. Our boat was not too far away, but by the time I swam to the cave and then made my way back, I was tuckered out. It’s easy to forget how tiring swimming can be, especially when there’s a bit of a current!
Lunch in Unexpected Places
Cruising along, we spotted signs on the shoreline pointing to a restaurant in the trees. We secured our boat to a small dock and followed a dirt path to a little house that had been converted into a restaurant. They had five or six tables outside and just a few menu items, but it was a great little place for lunch. So unexpected, yet so perfect.
Snorkeling Fears and Fun
Afterward, we resumed our water adventure and made a pit stop for snorkeling. When I say “we,” I should clarify that Brian, Danette, and Phil, snorkeled. I am so afraid of sharks, that whenever I’d jump in the water, I’d pretty quickly be looking to get right back on the boat. Less time in the water equals reduced chance of being eaten by Jaws. LOL
Our Boat Ride Back to Hvar
Later in the afternoon, we found a beachfront restaurant and enjoyed a drink, capping off a day filled with exploration. As the sun started getting closer to the horizon, we decided we’d better head back to Hvar harbor. The catch was that every boat on the water seemed to have the same idea simultaneously, creating sizable waves.
Navigating Hvar’s Waters
Our little boat, which already rode low in the water, started taking on water with each wave. Soon, we had about four inches of water inside the boat, and the back end was barely above the waterline. Phil instructed us all to move to the front of the boat, and that’s when I started considering the possibility that we might sink.
We had assumed that the boats were deliberately adjusted for slower speeds to enhance safety. However, in our situation, moving at a snail’s pace meant that each wave splashed up and into the boat’s hull.
Aqua Escapades in Hvar
Thankfully, we made it back to the harbor, and in retrospect, it was pretty funny. However, truth be told, we were all a little worried there for a few minutes.
So, here’s my advice: If you feel comfortable doing so, I’d wholeheartedly recommend renting a boat in Hvar. We had an amazing day on the water. In fact, it was one of our favorite days. Just be sure to rent the boat that goes 20 knots or faster! 😊
