Why Croatia Should Be At The TOP Of Your Bucket List

Having traveled all over Europe, I often get asked for suggestions on where to go.  Typically, I’ve always recommended Italy – from the serene vibes of Lake Como to the history-rich streets of Rome, the charm of Florence to the romance of Positano, the magic of Venice to the beauty of Cortona – Italy has it all.  However, after visiting Croatia, I think it should also be added to the top of any bucket list.

Croatia is stunningly beautiful, and it has so much to offer.  Dubrovnik, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic” has an ambiance that feels like stepping into a storybook.  From the moment you step within its city walls, you’re transported into a realm where time seems to stand still.  But Dubrovnik isn’t just about history; it has an eclectic dining scene and serves as a vibrant hub of culture. It’s also where they filmed parts of “Game of Thrones.”

Dubrovnik is also a great base for interesting day trips such as Mostar, the Elaphiti Islands, and Montenegro.  Several Croatian cities provide convenient access to incredible day trip destinations. For example, from Rovinj, you can reach Venice in just a 3-hour ferry ride. Additionally, Ljubljana is an easy day trip from Zagreb, and from Split, you can visit various islands and Plitvice Park.

Speaking of Plitvice National Park, it is truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.  I wasn’t sure it would live up to the beauty shown in photos, but it absolutely does.  It is undeniably stunning, with its intricate network of waterfalls and lakes surrounded by lush greenery.  If you make your way to Croatia, Plitvice is an absolute must.

Then you have the islands of Croatia – more than 700 of them  – that each have their own character, offering a blend of natural wonders, historic treasures, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe.  Each island, from Hvar’s lavender fields and vibrant nightlife to Vis’ secluded coves, offers a unique experience.  Korcula has its medieval streets and Marco Polo legend, while Brac has the iconic Zlatni Rat beach.

Exploring the islands, you’ll find stunning beaches and crystal-blue waters, the perfect backdrop for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling.  During our trip, we spent several days on the water, zipping around on jet skis and cruising by boat, stopping off to swim in blue grottos and enjoying the fresh catch-of-the-day at family-owned eateries hidden amongst the trees along the sandy shores.

Out of all of the amazing places we visited while in Croatia, Rovinj was my favorite.  It’s like a colorful painting come to life, with its narrow cobblestone streets, pastel buildings, quaint shops, and stunning views.  Sleek yachts coexist with simple fishing boats, and its promenade lined with cafes is pure heaven for a foody like me.

Rovinj is also the perfect base for exploring Croatia’s Istria region.  Just a stone’s throw away is Pula, with its well-preserved Roman amphitheater – a journey back in time that history buffs will love.  And if your adventure aligns with the vibrant summer months, don’t miss the chance to take in one of the weekly Summertime concerts held here.

Venturing further into Istria, nearby Motovun, Pazin and Groznjan are all within easy reach of Rovinj.  These charming little hill towns gave me Tuscany vibes…..think rolling hills and charming little towns reminiscent of Pienza and San Gimignano.  Tour the towns, visit a couple of wineries, and then partake in a hound-led truffle hunt followed by dinner made with your golden bounty.

Whether your seeking relaxation, adventure, history, or culture, there’s a little bit of something for everybody in Croatia.  If you’d like to plan a trip to Croatia, check out my 16-day Croatia/Slovenia itinerary here.
