I absolutely LOVED Salzburg. It’s such a unique and beautiful little city, nestled in the Alps and surrounded by endless natural beauty. Strolling through the Altstadt (Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage site, you’ll find cobblestone streets lined with the most picturesque little cafes and shops. Plan on taking lots of pictures because the city’s baroque architecture is a sight to behold, with the magnificent Hohensalzburg Fortress offering panoramic views of the surroundings. It really is one of the most charming places you’ll ever see!
If you’re a nature lover, Salzburg has much to offer. You can enjoy water activities on the Salzach River or go to the nearby mountains for excellent hiking and skiing opportunities.
Vienna isn’t the only Austrian city for avid music lovers. Music lovers from around the globe flock to Salzburg to experience the magic of the annual Salzburg Festival, which takes place during July and August.
While Salzburg can be seen in a day, I recommend staying for a couple of days. I really wanted to take the Apple Strudel cooking class, but we didn’t have enough time. If you’re interested, check it out here. As for day trips from Salzburg, the Eagles Nest is just 20 miles away. We did an organized tour and it was not only very interesting (albeit a bit sad at points), but the views from the Eagle’s Nest were simply stunning.
Also, don’t forget to visit the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where the iconic “Do-Re-Mi” scene from “The Sound of Music” was filmed. Speaking of The Sound of Music………..we saw JULIE ANDREWS WHILE WE WERE IN SALZBURG!!!!! What are the chances of that? It turned out that she was there for the 50th anniversary of the Sound of Music and was staying in our hotel. As my husband and I went down to dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, we walked by her as she sat and visited with some friends. I pulled out my camera and was trying to get some pictures on the sly, until my husband scolded me for it. What can I say?!?! It was a moment that needed to be captured (although my pictures were far away and out of focus).
Salzburg is a great place to purchase souvenirs. Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, so there are lots of Mozart-themed gifts and souvenirs. In some cities, you’ll find cheap, imported souvenirs, but much of what we saw in Salzburg was handcrafted. I collect Christmas ornaments, so I was able to find the cutest little Mozart that bounces.
Be sure to try one of Salzburg’s famous Mozartkugel chocolates, which are dark chocolate filled with Marzipan, pistachio and nougat.
Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a picturesque and culturally enriching destination, Salzburg welcomes you with open arms and a warm, friendly atmosphere.
