For my husband’s sabbatical we knew we wanted to go somewhere fabulous, and after throwing around several destination options, we decided on Greece. Since we’d already been to Santorini and Mykonos, we decided to spend the month in Crete and Corfu. We started in Elounda, then made our way to Rethymno, and then landed at our final destination in Crete, Chania.
Our check-in at Domes Zeen Chania resort was quick and easy. This was good because the amazing view from the lobby made us want to hurry down to the beach. Our Marriott Gold status gave us access to the lobby lounge, which had free snacks, beer and wine. After a quick beverage, we hopped on a golf cart, and the bellman escorted us to our room and gave us the grand tour. A bottle of wine and a plate of fresh fruit awaited us.
Our villa, which was nestled amidst lush greenery, offered the perfect blend of modern design and natural beauty. When we opened our villa door, we didn’t expect to find the bed smack dab in the middle of the room, but somehow the distinctiveness of this design seemed to flow effortlessly, and we loved the unique setup. I often struggle with the beds while traveling in Europe because they are quite firm. However, our king-sized bed was incredibly comfortable, and we slept well.
Once again, the private plunge pool was undoubtedly the highlight of the accommodation. Surrounded by tall palms and vibrant flowers, it became our nightly routine to relax in the water while sipping a happy hour cocktail in this tropical little oasis.
The outdoor spaces at Zeen gave me a “Hawaii meets Sedona” vibe. I’d describe it as a blend of Hawaii’s lush tropical beauty meets the rustic charm of Sedona. The resort’s grounds has lush greenery and vibrant bursts of colors. There are flowers, interwoven with the desert-like and earthy landscapes of Sedona. There were even prickly pear cactuses dotting the landscape, which had me craving a prickly pear margarita. They are delicious and you can find the recipe here).
We enjoyed complimentary breakfast and had a plethora of options from cold cereal to made-to-order omelets. All sorts of juices, custom coffee options like cappuccinos or lattes. You name it….it was there. They offered seating inside under the AC or outside under an umbrella. We also enjoyed a few dinners at the resort restaurant, and our reservation included a complimentary dinner. Food was fresh and locally sourced, and service was great. The hotel restaurant sits right near the hotel’s main Olympic-size pool. The pool offers beautiful views and service is lightning fast, as each sun lounger has a call button which was fabulous!
The resort a quick 10-minute drive to Chania’s old town, which is a maze of alleys with colorful shops, cafes, and tavernas. It’s a lively area and a must visit location while in Chania.
All in all, we loved Chania, as well as our lovely accommodations at Domes Zeen Chania. It’s a serene atmosphere and a wonderful escape. To read about our other stays in Crete, check out my reviews of Domes of Elounda and Casa Negro in Rethymno.
