Mykonos, known for its stunning beaches, fun nightlife, and charming architecture, is a must-visit destination in Greece. Whether you’re looking to relax by the sea, explore picturesque towns, or dance the night away, Mykonos offers a blend of relaxation and excitement.

Best Time to Visit:

  • High Season: June to September. Expect warm weather and bustling crowds, especially in July and August.
  • Shoulder Season: Late May and October. Enjoy pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists, perfect for a more laid-back experience.
  • Off-Season: November to April. Ideal for budget travelers, but many places may close.

Personally, I prefer visiting in May-June or September-October for ideal weather.

Getting Between the Islands:

Mykonos is well-connected by ferry to several nearby islands and the mainland. Here are some of the main routes:

1. Cyclades Islands:

  • Santorini: Frequent ferries connect Mykonos to this popular island, with a journey time of about 2-3 hours.
  • Naxos: Ferries run regularly, taking around 1-2 hours.
  • Paros: This route typically takes 1-2 hours as well.
  • Syros: Ferries operate between Mykonos and this capital of the Cyclades in about 1 hour.
  • Tinos: Just a short ferry ride of about 30 minutes connects Mykonos to Tinos.

2. Other Islands:

  • Delos: A quick trip of about 30 minutes takes you to this archaeological wonder.
  • Ikaria: Limited services, but possible routes are available.

3. Mainland:

  • Athens (Piraeus and Rafina): Ferries from both ports to Mykonos are frequent, with travel times ranging from 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on the type of ferry.

Tips:

  • Book in Advance: Especially during peak season, as ferries can fill up quickly.
  • Check Schedules: Ferry schedules can vary, so it’s best to check closer to your travel date for the most accurate information.
  • Quick Trip: If you’re not too limited for time, try to take the quick ferry ride to Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore ancient ruins and rich history, including temples and a stunning amphitheater.

  • Public Buses: Affordable and convenient, with regular routes to beaches and towns.
  • Car/Scooter Rentals: Great for exploring more remote areas and beaches. Be cautious of local driving habits!
  • Taxis: Readily available but can be expensive, especially during peak times.

Accommodations

Brian and I stayed at the Mykonos Princess, and we found it to be a little slice of paradise. Set atop a hillside, the hotel offers gorgeous views of the Aegean Sea and is just a five-minute walk from the Agios Stefanos beach. Waking up to the stunning views and enjoying the sunset from our lanai were definite highlights of our trip.

While we didn’t dine for dinner at the hotel, we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious breakfast that was included. There were lots of great options. In the evenings, we loved having a cocktail and relaxing by the pool bar, soaking in the beautiful weather and stunning views. This hotel is an ideal spot for anyone wanting to indulge in the beauty and charm of Mykonos!

Cuisine

I love Greek food so much! I swear every time we come back from a vacation in Greece, I find myself eating Greek salads for the next month. Some other great things to make sure to try are the moussaka, and the famous Mykonian kopanisti cheese, as well as the fresh seafood.

A few great dining spots to try out are Pho’s, Efisia, and Compass. All three of these restaurants have excellent food and a lovely ambiance.

If you decide to visit Mykonos, I guarantee you’ll thoroughly enjoy yourself. Whether lounging on a sunbed, exploring historical sites, or reveling in the nightlife, this island is a great place to visit. Embrace the laid-back charm of Mykonos and create unforgettable memories in this Greek paradise!
