Preparing the Perfect Guest Bedroom

With the holiday season approaching, many of us are preparing to welcome house guests. Of course, it’s essential to make sure the guest bedroom and bathroom are clean, well-stocked with fresh towels, a blow dryer, and toilet paper. However, there are additional touches you can add to make their stay extra special. Here’s how I create a warm and welcoming environment for my guests:

1. Fresh Linens

It’s a given to use fresh linens, but here’s a little trick my friend Kim taught me: wash the sheets the day before your guests arrive instead of washing them the day after your guests leave.  This way, they’re as fresh and fragrant as possible when your guests settle in.

2. Comfortable Bedding

Everyone who stays at my house raves about our comfortable beds.  For a cozy bed, I have a few favorite items:

  • Bed Toppers: I use these plush toppers from Amazon. They really make a HUGE difference in how comfortable the bed feels.
  • Pillows: I love these fluffy down-alternative pillows from Costco. They’re just the best pillows ever.
  • Sheets: Go with bamboo sheets. They’re SUPER soft and smooth—if you haven’t tried them yet, you’ll love how they feel!

3. Extra Blankets

I keep a basket with extra throw blankets for those chilly nights. I use these throws from Nordstrom that are buttery soft (they go on sale fairly regularly).

4. Bedside Table Essentials

Make the bedside table a little extra special with bottled water, snacks (I usually go for almonds and chocolate), an eye mask, and ear plugs.  We also have a smart speaker (Alexa) on the nightstand because it’s handy for setting alarms or playing music.

5. Bathroom Necessities

In the bathroom, I set up a basket and fill it with all the essentials you can thing of:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash
  • Q-Tips, cotton balls, and Band-Aids
  • Soap, shower cap, shampoo, and conditioner
  • Lotion, lip balm, nail file, and other toiletries they might need

6. Wi-Fi Information

Leave a note or card with the Wi-Fi network name and password. It’s a small but helpful touch that makes staying connected easy.

7. Storage Space

Provide a couple of empty drawers and some closet space with hangers. If you have room, a luggage rack or stand can make it easier for guests to access their suitcase.

8. Smelling Great

Set your favorite unscented candle in the room. Even if you don’t light it, the subtle fragrance will still fill the space. My all-time favorite candles are Lafco Sea & Dune and Anthropologie Capri Blue Volcano

9. Personal Touches

Add a small vase of fresh flowers to brighten up the room. It’s a simple way to make the space feel warm and welcoming.

Nothing shows a guest that you’re glad to have them there than a thoughtfully put together welcome.  They’ll appreciate the thought you’ve put into making their stay special!
