Kayaking Detour: The Perfect Pitstop on the Drive Between Split and Plitvice

Our Kayaking Adventure on the Zrmanja River

If you’re looking for a fun pitstop to break up the drive between Plitvice National Park and Split, we found just the thing!

First off, don’t worry if the route seems a bit off the beaten path—just follow the GPS coordinates and you’ll get there. We passed through some interesting spots, including abandoned towns and meandering sheep, making the drive part of the adventure.

We started our trip in Kastel Zegarski, surrounded by beautiful nature and clear waters. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Split and an hour and a half from Plitvice. Furthermore, the kayaking adventure is great for all skill levels. Even kids as young as 6 can join in, so if you’re new to kayaking, you’re in for a fun time. As experienced kayakers, we still had a blast and enjoyed the stunning scenery.

After getting our gear and a quick lesson, we hit the water. The first section was nice and calm, perfect for practicing paddling and taking in the views. Then things got a bit more exciting with some fun rapids. We took a refreshing 15-minute swim break, which was a welcome cool-down on a hot day.

One of the highlights was definitely jumping off a cliff towards the end of the trip. It was a thrill! Since we were in a tandem kayak, one of us jumped while the other navigated through the falls. A few people tipped over, but Brian managed to stay upright, just barely!

After a few hours on the river, we ended up in a small village where we could shower, change, and grab a bite to eat. Then we got a ride back to the starting point.

If you’ve got a few hours to spare on your drive between Plitvice and Split, this kayaking adventure is a fantastic pitstop. We had a great time and I’m sure you will too!
