It’s ultra-romantic, with boutique hotels built right into the cliffs, candlelit restaurants, and luxurious suites with private plunge pools. It’s quieter than Fira and a great pick if you’re celebrating a honeymoon or want the ultimate “I’m in Santorini” feeling.

- Cons: Pricey, crowded during sunset, limited nightlife.
- Tip: Book well in advance if traveling between May and September—Oia fills up fast!
Imerovigli: Peaceful Luxury with the Best Views

Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera and offers arguably the best panoramic views on the island—without Oia’s crowds. It’s a quieter, more refined version of Oia with equally luxurious accommodations but a more serene vibe. Stay in Oia if you want peace, privacy, and jaw-dropping sunsets right from your balcony.

Stay here in Fira if you want walkable access to restaurants and bars, are visiting without a car, or are traveling with friends or family.

- Tip: Firostefani, just a short walk from Fira, offers a quieter stay while keeping you close to the action.

Megalochori: Hidden Gem with Boho Charm

Megalochori is an under-the-radar gem, full of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-draped courtyards, and quiet cobblestone streets. If you want to unplug, explore on foot, and feel like you have Santorini to yourself, Megalochori is a great option.
- Pros: Peaceful, pretty, traditional village vibe, boutique accommodations.
- Cons: Very quiet at night, no caldera view from most stays.
- Tip: Pair your stay here with a winery visit or a private tour of the island’s historic inland villages.
Getting to and from Santorini Airport (JTR)
- Taxi: Easiest and fastest option, but limited availability—book in advance.
- Private Transfer: Your hotel may offer this. Worth the splurge for a smooth arrival.
- Shuttle Services: Shared vans can be booked online and are a more affordable alternative to taxis.
- Public Bus: Budget option (around 3 USD), but may require a transfer in Fira depending on where you’re staying. Not ideal with luggage.
- Tip: If arriving by ferry, book a transfer ahead of time—Athinios Port can be chaotic.
Getting Around the Island
- Quad Bike/ATV Rental: Super fun and flexible, especially for reaching beaches and inland villages. Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Car Rental: Best for families or anyone wanting to explore beyond the caldera. Roads are narrow in villages, so park outside and walk in.
- Local Buses: Reliable and budget-friendly, though they run mostly to and from Fira. Expect crowds in peak season.

Where to Stay
Santorini has no shortage of stunning stays, but if you can splurge for a caldera view and private pool, do it—you won’t regret waking up to those dreamy blue vistas. Here are two fantastic choices:
- Aenaon Villas: My personal favorite. With only six villas perched along the edge of the caldera, it feels like a secluded slice of heaven. We stayed in the Elidami Villa—perched high up for maximum privacy and panoramic views. It’s romantic, peaceful, and unforgettable.
- Dreams Luxury Suites: I’ve also stayed at Dreams Luxury Suites, which is a fantastic option if you want luxury without such a hefty price tag. The suites are stylish, many come with plunge pools, and the views are stunning. We stayed in the Armonia Suite, which was lovely.
Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Fira
Afternoon:
- Lunch at Athenian House: Enjoy a delicious lunch at Athenian House in Fira, known for its modern Greek cuisine and stunning caldera views.
- Stroll around Fira: Begin your exploration with a walk around Fira. Enjoy the charming streets, boutique shops, and panoramic views of the caldera. Spend some time shopping for local crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs in Fira’s quaint shops and boutiques. Be sure to take lots of pictures of this amazing town and the surrounding views.
Something Unique to Try: If you have a little extra time in Fira, consider getting a fish pedicure. These tiny fish gently nibble away dead skin from your feet, offering an exfoliating experience and a wonderfully ticklish sensation.
Evening:
- Dinner at La Colline Restaurant: Enjoy dinner at La Colline Restaurant, which offers exquisite Mediterranean dishes and a lovely atmosphere. The views, wine, and ambiance make it a perfect first-night treat.
Day 2: Boat Trip and Winery Visit
Morning:
- Private Boat Trip: Cruise the caldera, swim in volcanic hot springs, and enjoy lunch on board with the island as your backdrop. Book early in your trip in case weather requires rescheduling—we had to try twice due to strong winds!
Tip: I would recommend doing this in the earlier days of your itinerary in case there is a need to reschedule (we were cancelled twice due to windy conditions).
Late Afternoon:
- Winery Visit: This clifftop winery is the perfect post-boat stop. Sip Santorini’s famous Assyrtiko while overlooking the sparkling sea at Santo Wines, one of Santorini’s renowned wineries.
Fun Fact: Santorini’s vines grow in circular baskets (the “kouloura” method) to shield grapes from the island’s fierce winds and sun.
Evening:
- Dinner at the Winery: After your wine tasting, enjoy dinner at Santos Winery.
Day 3: Island Exploration and Oia
Morning:
- Quad Bike Adventure: The best way to see Santorini’s wild beauty is with the wind in your hair. Stop at:
- Red Beach: Striking red cliffs and clear water.
- Vlychada Beach: Quiet and otherworldly.
- Pyrgos Village: Climb to the Venetian castle for panoramic views.
- Megalochori: A charming, sleepy village with traditional Cycladic vibes.
Tip: Make sure to stop for some photos at some of Santorini’s stunning viewpoints. Places like the hills around Emporio and the clifftop paths offer breathtaking vistas of the caldera.
Late Afternoon:
- Lunch at Karma: Head to Oia for a late lunch at Karma. This spot offers great Mediterranean dishes with a lovely view of the caldera. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a relaxed meal and take in the charming atmosphere of Oia.
