Which Area to Stay
Santorini is small but diverse, with each area having its own mood, pace, and perks. Whether you’re honeymooning, solo exploring, or traveling with friends, here’s how to pick the perfect place to stay.
Oia: Iconic, Romantic, and Picture Perfect
Best for: Honeymooners, luxury lovers, and first-time dreamers
Oia is the postcard-perfect Santorini you’ve seen on Instagram—whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches, and mind-blowing sunsets. It’s ultra-romantic, with boutique hotels built right into the cliffs, candlelit restaurants, and luxurious suites with private plunge pools. It’s quieter than Fira and a great pick if you’re celebrating a honeymoon or want the ultimate “I’m in Santorini” feeling.
- Pros: The most iconic views, upscale atmosphere, designer shops, perfect for romance.
- Cons: Pricey, crowded during sunset, limited nightlife.
- Tip: Book well in advance if traveling between May and September—Oia fills up fast!
Imerovigli: Peaceful Luxury with the Best Views
Best for: Couples who want serenity, space, and stunning sunsets
Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera and offers arguably the best panoramic views on the island—without Oia’s crowds. It’s a quieter, more refined version of Oia with equally luxurious accommodations but a more serene vibe. Stay in Oia if you want peace, privacy, and jaw-dropping sunsets right from your balcony.
- Pros: Dramatic sunsets, fewer tourists, spacious suites with epic views, romantic.
- Cons: Fewer shops and restaurants nearby, but easily accessible to Fira by taxi or foot.
- Tip: Many luxury cave hotels here offer indoor/outdoor jacuzzis or infinity pools with views.
Fira: Vibrant, Central, and Walkable
Best for: First-time visitors, social travelers, and those who want action
Fira is Santorini’s capital and the island’s hub of activity. Here you’ll find lively restaurants, shops, galleries, clubs, and the main bus terminal. It’s ideal for travelers who want variety, nightlife, and easy access to everything, including public transport. Stay here in Fira if you want walkable access to restaurants and bars, are visiting without a car, or are traveling with friends or family.
- Pros: Central location, vibrant nightlife, easy access to buses, budget-friendly options.
- Cons: Can feel busy and touristy, especially in high season.
- Tip: Firostefani, just a short walk from Fira, offers a quieter stay while keeping you close to the action.
Pyrgos: Authentic, Charming, and Local
Best for: Culture seekers, foodies, and those wanting a more authentic Greek village vibe
Pyrgos is a traditional hilltop village with winding lanes, old churches, and panoramic views from its Venetian castle. It’s ideal for a slower pace and immersing yourself in the island’s heritage. Opt to stay in Pyrgos if you prefer tradition over trends and want to experience local life.
- Pros: Fewer crowds, authentic tavernas, charming boutique stays.
- Cons: No caldera views unless you stay at a hillside hotel.
- Tip: Pyrgos is near many of the island’s top wineries, perfect for wine lovers!
Perivolos or Kamari: Beachside and Laid-Back
Best for: Sunseekers, families, and travelers on a budget
These black sand beach towns on the southeast coast of Santorini offer a totally different vibe. They are more relaxed, more affordable, and perfect if you want to spend your days swimming, sunbathing, and sipping cocktails on the shore. Stay here if you’re all about beach days, or traveling with kids and prefer a flat, walkable area.
- Pros: Beach access, beach bars, family-friendly, good value hotels.
- Cons: No caldera views, farther from Oia and Fira.
- Tip: Rent a car or ATV if staying here—you’ll want flexibility to explore the rest of the island.
Megalochori: Hidden Gem with Boho Charm
Best for: Off-the-beaten-path travelers, couples, and serenity seekers
Megalochori is an under-the-radar gem, full of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-draped courtyards, and quiet cobblestone streets. If you want to unplug, explore on foot, and feel like you have Santorini to yourself, Megalochori is a great option.
- Pros: Peaceful, pretty, traditional village vibe, boutique accommodations.
- Cons: Very quiet at night, no caldera view from most stays.
- Tip: Pair your stay here with a winery visit or a private tour of the island’s historic inland villages.

Getting to and from Santorini Airport (JTR)
- Taxi: Easiest and fastest option, but limited availability—book in advance.
- Private Transfer: Your hotel may offer this. Worth the splurge for a smooth arrival.
- Shuttle Services: Shared vans can be booked online and are a more affordable alternative to taxis.
- Public Bus: Budget option (around 3 USD), but may require a transfer in Fira depending on where you’re staying. Not ideal with luggage.
- Tip: If arriving by ferry, book a transfer ahead of time—Athinios Port can be chaotic.
Getting Around the Island
- Quad Bike/ATV Rental: Super fun and flexible, especially for reaching beaches and inland villages. Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Car Rental: Best for families or anyone wanting to explore beyond the caldera. Roads are narrow in villages, so park outside and walk in.
- Local Buses: Reliable and budget-friendly, though they run mostly to and from Fira. Expect crowds in peak season.
- Taxis: Expensive and hard to find on the spot—use sparingly or book through your hotel.
- Private Tours: A fantastic option for hitting hidden gems and learning local history without the stress of navigating.
Where to Stay
Santorini has no shortage of stunning stays, but if you can splurge for a caldera view and private pool, do it—you won’t regret waking up to those dreamy blue vistas. Here are two fantastic choices:
- Aenaon Villas: My personal favorite. With only six villas perched along the edge of the caldera, it feels like a secluded slice of heaven. We stayed in the Elidami Villa—perched high up for maximum privacy and panoramic views. It’s romantic, peaceful, and unforgettable.

- Dreams Luxury Suites: I’ve also stayed at Dreams Luxury Suites, which is a fantastic option if you want luxury without such a hefty price tag. The suites are stylish, many come with plunge pools, and the views are stunning. We stayed in the Armonia Suite, which was lovely.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Fira
Afternoon:
- Lunch at Athenian House: Enjoy a delicious lunch at Athenian House in Fira, known for its modern Greek cuisine and stunning caldera views.

- Stroll around Fira: Begin your exploration with a walk around Fira. Enjoy the charming streets, boutique shops, and panoramic views of the caldera. Spend some time shopping for local crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs in Fira’s quaint shops and boutiques. Be sure to take lots of pictures of this amazing town and the surrounding views.

Something Unique to Try: If you have a little extra time in Fira, consider getting a fish pedicure. These tiny fish gently nibble away dead skin from your feet, offering an exfoliating experience and a wonderfully ticklish sensation.

Evening:
- Dinner at La Colline Restaurant: Enjoy dinner at La Colline Restaurant, which offers exquisite Mediterranean dishes and a lovely atmosphere. The views, wine, and ambiance make it a perfect first-night treat.

Day 2: Boat Trip and Winery Visit
Morning:
- Private Boat Trip: Cruise the caldera, swim in volcanic hot springs, and enjoy lunch on board with the island as your backdrop. Book early in your trip in case weather requires rescheduling—we had to try twice due to strong winds!
Tip: I would recommend doing this in the earlier days of your itinerary in case there is a need to reschedule (we were cancelled twice due to windy conditions).
Late Afternoon:
- Winery Visit: This clifftop winery is the perfect post-boat stop. Sip Santorini’s famous Assyrtiko while overlooking the sparkling sea at Santo Wines, one of Santorini’s renowned wineries.
Fun Fact: Santorini’s vines grow in circular baskets (the “kouloura” method) to shield grapes from the island’s fierce winds and sun.

Evening:
- Dinner at the Winery: After your wine tasting, enjoy dinner at Santos Winery.
Day 3: Island Exploration and Oia
Morning:
- Quad Bike Adventure: The best way to see Santorini’s wild beauty is with the wind in your hair. Stop at:
- Red Beach: Striking red cliffs and clear water.
- Vlychada Beach: Quiet and otherworldly.
- Pyrgos Village: Climb to the Venetian castle for panoramic views.
- Megalochori: A charming, sleepy village with traditional Cycladic vibes.
Tip: Make sure to stop for some photos at some of Santorini’s stunning viewpoints. Places like the hills around Emporio and the clifftop paths offer breathtaking vistas of the caldera.
Late Afternoon:
- Lunch at Karma: Head to Oia for a late lunch at Karma. This spot offers great Mediterranean dishes with a lovely view of the caldera. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a relaxed meal and take in the charming atmosphere of Oia.
- Explore Oia: This is Santorini at its most iconic—think whitewashed walls, blue domes, and pink bougainvillea. It’s a great place to soak up the local vibe, snap some fantastic photos, and just enjoy the beautiful scenery. Explore, shop, and get ready for a magical sunset.
Evening:
- Dinner at Ammoudi Fish Tavern: Fresh seafood by the water’s edge in Ammoudi Bay. My top pick! Make a reservation and go early enough to catch the sunset as you dine. You can read my full review here.
Day 4: Traditional Greek Wedding and Hidden Gems
Morning/Afternoon:
- Take an Island Tour: Discover the best of Santorini on a guided day tour. We explored the island with Your Greek Friend and visited both popular sights and off-the-beaten-path treasures. Many of the island tours will help tailor the itinerary to your preferences.

Evening:
- Experience a Traditional Greek Wedding: Attend a Traditional Greek Wedding at The White Door Theatro. This immersive experience offers a taste of Greek culture, complete with music, dance, and local cuisine, so bring your dancing shoes! You can read my full review of the experience here.
Late Evening:
- Final Toast: Wrap your last night with cocktails and dessert at a cliffside bar—Ambrosia or PK Cocktail Bar are great picks. Sip champagne, watch the twinkling lights of the island, and soak in the magic one last time.

Final Tips
- What to Pack: Flowy dresses, comfortable sandals, swimwear, a hat, and layers for breezy evenings.
- Best Time to Go: Late May to early October offers the best weather. September is a dream—warm, less crowded, and still lively.
- Visit Another Island: If you have more than four days in Greece, consider adding a nearby island to your itinerary for a well-rounded Greek adventure.
- Paros is a fantastic choice—just a short ferry ride from Santorini (about 2–3 hours), it’s less crowded but full of charm. Think whitewashed villages, golden beaches, great restaurants, and a relaxed vibe. Naoussa, in particular, is a picture-perfect fishing village with a chic edge.
- Naxos: Known for its long beaches, ancient ruins, and laid-back authenticity.
- Milos: A hidden gem famous for its surreal rock formations, crystal-clear water, and off-the-beaten-path feel.
- Ios: Perfect for beach lovers and younger travelers—great for a mix of fun and relaxation.
- Best Instagram Spot: The three blue domes in Oia just after sunrise—less crowded and soft light!”
