I have to say, riding a camel was the thing I was most looking forward to during our trip to Marrakech! It’s not something you get to experience in America, and I knew it would be a truly unique experience. I turned out that the experience was even better than the anticipation.
There was a bit of confusion as we went to where we thought we were supposed to be meeting our tour guide, as nobody was there. We wandered around, a bit confused, until we found an English-speaking tour guide who was nice enough to make a call for us and find that we were in fact in the right place, but the tour had been postponed and was starting an hour later. As the van arrived, we loaded up and drove to the edge of town where we met up with our caravan of camels. After some brief instruction and introductions to our even-toed ungulate friends, we hopped atop our camels and began to make our way through the palm groves. It was a leisurely ride, swaying back-and-forth to the camel’s gait. I don’t think Shawna and I could have wiped the smiles off of our faces if we tried.
We stopped off for some Moroccan mint tea, olives and bread, at a Berber family home before making our way back across the dessert as the sun began to disappear into the horizon. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience riding on these incredible animals off into the sunset.
