Munich Adventure: A 3-Day Guide

My visit to Munich was a delightful surprise in every sense. I had heard many positive things about the city, but nothing could have prepared me for the instant connection I felt. Initially, it was on our itinerary due to Oktoberfest, but Munich managed to captivate me in unexpected ways.  I found myself thoroughly enamored by its vibrant culture and the welcoming atmosphere, particularly within the heart of the historic center.  If you’re traveling to Munich, I hope you love it as much as I did. With that being said, here’s the three-day itinerary I recommend for Munich:

DAY 1

Morning: Marienplatz and Glockenspiel

  • Wander around Marienplatz, Munich’s central square.  If you’d like to pick up some gifts or souvenirs, Marienplatz and its surrounding streets have many shops selling everything from traditional Bavarian items like beer steins, lederhosen, dirndls, and trinkets.
  • Have breakfast at Café Glockenspiel, where you’ll have a prime view of the Glockenspiel show that starts at 11am.  It’s a popular attraction that features a mechanical clock with figurines that reenact historical events.
  • Visit Viktualienmarkt, a lively food market with stalls selling local delicacies.

Afternoon: Frauenkirche and Residenz Palace

  • Visit the iconic Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Dear Lady) with its distinctive twin towers.
  • Explore the Munich Residenz Palace, once the royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs. Don’t miss the Treasury and the Cuvilliés Theatre.

Evening: Traveling Dinner

  • Enjoy this evening’s meal by “Dinner Hopping.”  You’ll explore Munich on a dinner bus, stopping off at a different restaurant for each course – appetizers, dinner, and dessert.  It’s a fun way to explore Munich while enjoying delicious food, as well as a bit of magic and live performances.

DAY 2

Morning: Nymphenburg Palace

  • Enjoy breakfast at Café Ludwig located within Nymphenburg Palace’s park.  They offer breakfast items along with beautiful garden views. It’s a serene place to enjoy your morning meal.
  • Spend your morning at Nymphenburg Palace, a magnificent Baroque palace surrounded by beautiful gardens.  Visit the palace rooms and the Marstallmuseum (Carriage Museum).

Late Morning: Museum Quarter

  • Explore the Kunstareal (Munich’s Art Quarter), which includes the Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, and the Pinakothek der Moderne.  Art lovers can spend hours admiring works by famous artists like Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, and Picasso.

Afternoon: English Garden

  • Stroll through the English Garden, one of the largest urban parks in the world. You can relax by the Chinese Tower and watch surfers in the Eisbach River wave.

Evening: Food and Beverage Tour

DAY 3

All Day: Day Tour to Neuschwanstein Castle

Evening: Farewell to Munich Dinner

  • What could be better than enjoying your final night in Munich than having dinner and drinks at Hofbräuhaus?  In German tradition, be sure to enjoy a couple of Bavarian beers and some schnitzel.
Hofbrauhaus, Munich

I didn’t provide a hotel recommendation here because the hotel where we stayed was further away from Munich’s main center than I would recommend. However, friends of ours have stayed at Platz Hotel and were very happy with their stay.
