Best of Budapest: Our Top Two Experiences

I had wanted to visit Budapest for years and was so excited when I finally got to visit.  I was joined by my husband Brian, and our close friends Christy, Lee, Danette and Phil.  We had an amazing few days touring all over the city, but there were two outings that really stood out as fabulous.  Here they are:

#1   Danube Evening Jet Boat Ride

I can’t tell you how much I loved this jet boat ride!!!  If I could’ve changed one thing about it, it would have been booking it for 90 minutes instead of 30! 😊

As we slowly made our way to open water, the Captain said “hold on to your champagne.”  The speakers began blasting AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” and we took off at break-neck speed.

Wow.  Just wow.  Budapest at night is absolutely stunning! Seeing The Parliament, Chain Bridge, and Buda Castle illuminated and glowing down on the Danube was really a sight to see.

The music, the excitement, the beauty of it all, was just perfect.  So, if you’re in Budapest, you should ABSOLULTELY do this!

*Tip:  Book in advance for at least an hour-long tour.  We tried to extend our time, but they were all booked up.

#2     Faust Wine Cellar

In my search of the best things to do in Budapest, I happened upon Faust Wine Cellar.  Since our friends Phil and Danette were owners of their own winery (Tucannon Cellars), I thought this would be something they would really enjoy.

The Faust Wine Cellar was once part of a Dominican Cloister- a serene area that was used for prayer.  However, today, this medieval cavern has been transformed into an intimate venue to enjoy Hungarian wines.  It’s still quite a serene location, with just a few tables, lit by candlelight.

The Sommelier was wonderful, spending time with us telling us about the wines and what it is that makes Hungarian wine unique.  He and Phil got into some in depth wine maker speak about vinification, fermentation, and soils, and he ended up bringing us two additional special edition wines to try.  They were marvelous.

We’ve had the pleasure of enjoying many wine tastings, from Napa to Bordeaux, and Willamette Valley to Burgundy, all wonderful and enjoyable.  However, this location, so steeped in history and so very atmospheric, really made the evening special.  I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Budapest.

*Tip:  Be sure to make an advance reservation, as there are just a few tables.  Also, the location is a bit tricky, so be sure to have detailed directions.
