Restaurant review and dining experience
HAAB (located at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba Hotel in Playa Del Carmen) isn’t a traditional restaurant, it’s an intimate outdoor dining area that hosts a maximum of 14 people. Fiery torches and water fountains surround a huge stone table, perfectly nestled within a private garden. Two stone cocktail bars, topped with countless candles and liquor bottles sit on each side. The secluded setting within the trees felt like we were dining in the jungle.
Over the course of the evening, our host shared stories about Mayan history and culture, all while we enjoyed a fabulous six-course traditional Mayan-style dinner paired with cocktails (Bonus! Drinks are unlimited during dinner!). For me, the highlight of the experience was the ceremonial fire dancing by performers dressed in remarkable feathered headdresses, loincloths, and colorful huipils adorned with jewels, each with traditional body and face paint. They performed and entertained us throughout the evening and stayed to take pictures with the guests afterward.
If you have a few dining experiences on your bucket list (for example, dinner in the sky and dinner at an underwater restaurant are left unchecked on my list), HAAB is worthy of being added to the list. It is a truly unique, must-do dining experience that wowed us from start to finish. The official restaurant review for this unique dining adventure is 10 out of 10 stars. I highly recommend this experience!
