A Perfect Day at Lake Bled Slovenia

Nature’s Serenity and Adventure await at the beautiful Lake Bled Slovenia.

I’ve had Lake Bled Slovenia on my bucket list for a long time, ever since I saw it in a photo deck of “places you must visit before you die.” It really was just as pretty in person as I imagined it would be.

Nestled in the Julian Alps of Slovenia, Lake Bled is a gem that anyone who appreciates nature will fall in love with.  The charming town, with its emerald waters, island, and medieval cliffside castle, combines serenity and adventure.

Here’s a perfect day at Lake Bled…….

Lakeside Stroll

From Ljubljana, Lake Bled is a quick 40-minute drive by car or bus. Once you arrive, take a walk around the lake. It’s a gorgeous walk, just shy of 4-miles, but definitely doesn’t feel like it.

Boating to Bled Island

Bled Island, in the middle of the lake, looks to pretty to be real. You can get there via boat, opting for either a traditional Pletna boat rowed by an experienced boatman, or if energy prevails, embrace my choice – being rowed by your partner 😊.  The weather during our visit was perfect. We took advantage of it by stopping in the middle of the lake and relaxing in the sunshine for a bit before finally making our way to the island.

Folklore has it that climbing the 99 stone steps up to ring the church bell brings good luck. There was a wedding going on while we were there, so we couldn’t do it, but we wanted to, so hopefully our “intent” still brings the good luck our way!

Exploring Bled Castle

Upon returning to the mainland, take the walk to Bled Castle, perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the lake. If you’re tuckered out, there are taxis nearby for convenience. Wander through the castle’s interior and museum, as well as the wine cellar, where you can sample some of the region’s wines.  Additionally, the castle’s terrace is an excellent spot for capturing some fabulous Instagram-worthy photographs.

Lakeside Dining

As you descend from the castle, make your way to one of the quaint lakeside eateries for lunch. Be sure to try kremšnita, a heavenly concoction of vanilla and custard cream – it’s delicious.

Adventures at Lake Bled

For adventure seekers, there’s a tandem paragliding experience, or do like we did and head for the toboggan run. Brian and I both loved it! It was a blast winding down the mountain at around 25 mph.

If you’re considering spending some time in Lake Bled, do it. It is a peaceful, amazingly beautiful place that you will thoroughly enjoy.
