Ljubljana Slovenia – Europe’s Hidden Gem

Ljubljana Slovenia was never on my radar. As I was searching for flights for a vacation to Croatia, I was surprised to find it was the most convenient departure location for our homeward journey. So, as our Croatian vacation was coming to an end, we made our way to Ljubljana to spend our final days before departing for home.  What we didn’t anticipate was what a magical city it would be.  Ljubljana is truly Europe’s hidden gem.

Ljubljana’s old town has old-world charm, while also being modern and vibrant.  This juxtaposition is represented in two of the city’s emblematic bridges. Firstly, there’s the mythical Dragon Bridge adorned with dragon statues, and then the picturesque Butchers’ Bridge with its love locks.

Ljubljana Castle, sits above old town atop Castle Hill, towering over this charming city.  It’s especially lovely to view after dark, as it’s lit by the night sky.  The Ljubljanica River meanders through the charming old town. Both locals and visitors alike hang out at riverside cafes, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.  We found the mood in the area to be warm and welcoming, fostering a friendly atmosphere. You can explore numerous boutiques, museums, galleries, and theaters. If time permits, consider visiting the city’s museum, which provides insights into the city’s history and is worth a visit.

We had a good laugh after we came across a milk vending machine while touring around the city.  You just bring your jug, insert some coins, and fill up.  I have never seen these anywhere else in the world and it was the strangest thing!

I’d be curious to know if anyone else has ever encountered milk vending machines during their travels?

In the evening, we enjoyed live music and a casual dinner at the Central Market. Here you can immerse yourself in the local culture while sampling delicious Slovenian delicacies.  With over 30 food vendors to choose from, people casually took open spots at picnic tables or in the grass to enjoy their meals.  It was a laid-back atmosphere and we ended up staying for a couple of hours listening to the music, while I sampled regional wines and Brian enjoyed local craft beers.

Our quick visit to Ljubljana left us wanting to return in the future.  If you’re considering a trip to this corner of Europe, I wholeheartedly recommend including Ljubljana in your itinerary. I’d suggest two days to see Ljubljana Slovenia and a few additional days if you’d like to do day trips, which include Zagreb, Vintgar Gorge, Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, and Lake Bled.
