Nuremberg (2 nights – Dec 8-10)

If you’re in town during the holidays, the Nuremberg Christmas Market is a total must. Right in the Old Town, it’s all lit up and buzzing with festive energy. Stalls are packed with yummy treats like bratwurst, gingerbread, and mulled wine, plus tons of unique gifts. Just wander around, soak it all in, and enjoy the holiday vibes!

Hotel: Novotel Nuremberg Centre Ville is a good choice if you’re looking for a convenient place to stay near the Christmas markets. Modern, comfy, with spacious rooms.

You’ll find handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys, regional treats like Bethmännchen (marzipan cookies), and plenty of Glühwein (mulled wine). It’s one of Germany’s largest Christmas markets, but still feels charming and easy to explore.

Heidelberg is straight out of a storybook, especially at Christmastime. The Old Town is full of charming streets, twinkling lights, and cozy market stalls. Between exploring the castle ruins, strolling across the Old Bridge, and sipping hot mulled wine, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing, festive stop on your Christmas market trip.

Hotel: Hotel Villa Marstall – A very nice riverside boutique hotel in the Old Town, within walking distance to the markets. If you arrive prior check-in, the hotel provides a secure luggage storage area where you can leave your bags.

    • Market Dates: November 25 – December 22, 2025 (This is based on 2024 dates, as 2025 dates have not been officially released yet).

    • Ice skating at Karlsplatz beneath the castle backdrop.

  • Duration: 40 minutes by direct regional or ICE train. Regional trains do not have food service. On ICE trains, a bistro car serves drinks and light meals.



Stuttgart (2 nights – Dec 13-15)

Hotel: Le Meridien Stuttgart is just a 10-minute walk to the Christmas markets. My husband and I stayed here in December, and it was the perfect spot for our holiday trip. Cozy ambiance.

    • Market Dates: November 26 – December 23, 2025

    • Main Markets:
      • Stuttgart Christmas Market: This is the largest and most famous market, located in the city center around the historic Old Castle. It’s one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, dating back to 1692. You’ll find a charming mix of traditional wooden stalls, selling everything from handcrafted ornaments to festive treats like roasted almonds and mulled wine. The atmosphere is magical with beautiful lights, a large Christmas tree, and plenty of live music performances.
      • Stuttgart’s Medieval Christmas Market: Located near the Old Castle, this market offers a unique experience with a medieval twist. The market features stalls that resemble those from the Middle Ages, selling medieval-inspired goods, food, and crafts. The market has rustic charm, with artisans dressed in period costumes and selling handmade items like candles, pottery, and traditional toys. It’s a great place to step back in time while enjoying the festive cheer.
      • Christmas Market at Karlsplatz: This arket is a smaller, more intimate market that’s perfect for those looking for a cozy, relaxed vibe. The market is set up in the lovely Karlsplatz square, surrounded by beautiful architecture. Here, you can enjoy a variety of Christmas treats, local handicrafts, and mulled wine. The market has a very local, community feel to it.
      • Weihnachtsmarkt am Schlossplatz: This market is another prominent part of Stuttgart’s Christmas celebrations. The location is in front of the grand New Palace. It’s part of the main Stuttgart Christmas Market but focuses on high-quality, artisanal products. In addition, you’ll find premium handcrafted items, as well as gourmet food stalls offering a range of seasonal foods. The market is beautifully lit up and festive.
      • Stuttgart’s “Wintertraum” at the Markthalle: Known as the “Winter Dream,” this market inside Stuttgart’s iconic Market Hall is perfect for those looking for unique, locally sourced food and gourmet treats. The market offers an indoor experience where you can enjoy a wide range of delicacies like chocolate, pastries, and local specialties. I

    • Mercedes-Benz Museum – Fascinating for car enthusiasts.
    • Staatsgalerie Stuttgart – Art from the Middle Ages to modern.

    • Ludwigsburg – 15 minutes. Christmas Market with unique illuminations.
    • Esslingen – 20 minutes. A medieval-themed Christmas market with costumed vendors.

The train for this route takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on a direct regional train. There is no food service on these trains, so it’s a good idea to bring your own snacks and drinks for the journey.



Strasbourg (3 nights – Dec 15-18)

Hotel:  Hotel Léonor Strasbourg – We loved our stay at this modern hotel just steps from Strasbourg’s main Christmas markets. The in-house restaurant is popular, so be sure to book in advance if you want to dine there.

Restaurants:
    • Market Dates: November 27 – December 27, 2025
    • Place de la Cathédrale – Stunning backdrop with light shows.
    • Petite France district – Fairytale half-timbered houses dressed for the season.
    • Strasbourg Cathedral – Climb the tower for city views.
    • Boat ride on the Ill River – Especially scenic at night.
    • Colmar – 30 minutes. One of France’s most famous Christmas market towns.
    • Obernai – 30 minutes. Small but charming Alsatian market.
    • Baden-Baden, Germany – About 1.5 hours by train. Lovely Christmas market and the chance to warm up in the thermal baths.

Next Stop: Train Strasbourg → Basel

The direct regional train from Strasbourg to Basel takes about 1h 20m. During the holiday season it’s best to book tickets in advance to secure a seat. There’s no onboard dining car, but small snacks and drinks can sometimes be purchased at the station.



Basel (2 nights – Dec 18-20)

Basel’s Christmas markets are a must-see during the holiday season, offering a charming mix of traditional Swiss cheer and festive magic. The city’s medieval streets are beautifully lit with holiday decorations straight out of a Christmas card. Though the markets are larger than in some other towns, they maintain a cozy, inviting atmosphere that makes it easy to get into the holiday spirit.

Hotel: Hotel Schweizerhof is a stylish hotel just a 10-minute walk from Lucerne’s Christmas markets and right next to the central train station — perfect if you’re arriving by rail. Driving in? Reserve parking in advance (CHF 23/day).

    • Market Hours: Daily 11am-8:30pm (all close early on Dec 23 – Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz at 8:00pm and Münsterplatz at 6.00pm).

      • Weihnachtsmarkt am Munsterplatz (Main Christmas Market) – This is the largest and most famous market in Basel, set in front of the stunning Basel Minster. With over 180 stalls, it offers a mix of food, crafts, and Christmas decorations. You’ll find Swiss specialties like mulled wine, raclette, and gingerbread, along with handcrafted gifts and decorations. The atmosphere is festive and lively, with twinkling lights and music. It’s one of the best of Switzerland’s Christmas markets.
      • Weihnachtsmarkt Barfusserplatz – Located in one of Basel’s charming squares, this market is smaller but just as delightful. It offers a great selection of artisanal goods, from handmade ornaments to jewelry, as well as local treats. The surrounding historic buildings add to the market’s cozy vibe, making it perfect for a more relaxed visit.
      • Weihnachtsmarkt am Claraplatz – This market is known for its relaxed atmosphere and focus on local products. You’ll find everything from unique gifts to tasty regional foods. It’s a great spot to explore if you want to experience Basel’s local flavor in a more intimate setting.

    • Fairytale Forest – Activities for kids.
    • Kunstmuseum Basel – Renowned art collection.
    • Basel’s Advent Calendar: Historic buildings become part of a giant Advent calendar.
    • Ice Skating at the St. Jakob-Park: Lovely spot with a festive atmosphere.
    • Theater and OperaBasel’s Theater and Opera house feature holiday-themed productions, including Christmas-themed ballets, plays, and performances of The Nutcracker.
    • Lucerne – 1.5 hours. Lakeside markets and mountain scenery.
    • Zurich – 1 hour. Markets inside the main train station and along Bahnhofstrasse.

  • If you’re traveling by train, Basel’s main station (Basel SBB) is just a short tram ride or 15-minute walk to the city center and Christmas markets. Trams run frequently and drop you right in the middle of the festivities.

    For drivers, parking garages like Parkhaus City are close to the markets, though the center can get busy during the season.

    Flying in? The Basel–Mulhouse Airport is only 15 minutes away by taxi or public transport.

    Once in Basel, everything is walkable, making it easy to enjoy the markets at your own pace.
